OpenAI ChatGPT vs Google Bard
Since the beginning of 2023, most tech and SEO news has been dominated by talk of artificial intelligence, large language models and chatbots. This, predominantly due to the launch of OpenAI’s extremely popular ChatGPT at the end of 2022 and the subsequent update, GPT-4 which was released in March 2023.
The world’s leading search engines quickly understood the potential these large language models had to disrupt their business and consequently decided to throw their hats in the ring.
Bing was first to announce the integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model into its search engine, providing a ChatGPT-like experience. Shortly afterwards, the Google vs. Microsoft battle began to heat up as Google rushed to take part in the AI race with the release of their own Bard chatbot.
But with all the different articles and reviews flying around, it’s a bit difficult to distinguish if the two are really that different. Does one offer an added value that the other can’t? OpenAI
Functionality
- GPT-4 offers the ability to create and debug complex code. It also supports LaTeX markup so it can correctly display complex mathematical expressions.
- The AI integrated in Bing pulls all responses from its knowledge base.
- GPT-4 accepts both text and images as input.
Response accuracy
- ChatGPT remembers what was said in previous conversations – up to 3,000 words. However, it doesn’t know about events prior to September 2021, so responses can be limited.
- The new Bing offers one response per chat query.
- Bing provides source information for its responses through footnotes.
Availability/Accessibility
- GPT-4 is available through Microsoft Bing’s new AI chat feature.
- It is also available if you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus.
- Available in most countries and a number of languages.
Bard Experiment
Functionality
- After an April update, Bard can now help with code generation, debugging and code explanation. It can also assist with writing functions for Google Sheets.
- Bard can draw responses from the internet and can provide direct links to websites.
- Image input is not yet available on Bard.
Response accuracy
- Google has stated that Bard’s “ability to hold context is purposefully limited for now.”
- Bard offers multiple draft answers in response to a chat query.
- For the time being, the use of citations in Bard is limited.
Availability/Accessibility
- Bard is open to public access.
- Google has created a standalone website for Bard.
- It is currently only available to select markets in the U.S. and U.K. and only in English.
